Utter Bellocs archiveThe show is inspired by local poet Hilaire Belloc's contentious life and his deliriously twisted Cautionary Verse. Written early last century, and early in his career, Belloc was apparently attacking the hypocrisy of the Edwardian establishment and the British preoccupation with humbug (not humbugs - we would like to assure the viewer there was absolutely no confectionary harmed in the making of this show). To be honest, we don't give a monkey's about any of that. We do give a monkey's about the fact that most of the children Belloc writes about meet grizzly ends, often due to the negligence of indifferent grown-ups. As the dying Belloc lies helpless in his study, his final moments are haunted by the spectres of his past and the beatific young faces of his own invention. But now the literary progeny have turned on their originator. As a labyrinthine series of 'unfortunate' events transpire, the asinine infants of Belloc's imaginings show their true colours with mortifying consequences...
