Mary Beale: citizen of the 17th century Eastleigh, England's first female professional portrait artist. 2008: An overgrown garden in Allbrook, Hampshire. Eve opens her sketch book and begins to draw. But she is not alone. She is secretly being watched by a young boy called Bat, who, if Eve can only offer her friendship, will uncover the garden's mysterious and colourful past. 1665: Mary Beale, England's first professional female portrait artist, leaves London with her family and arrives in Allbrook. Mary is troubled. What makes a good person true? What makes her painting live?
