Perspective slips and distorts when the person you love dies too young and too suddenly. The future, which stretched so invitingly before you, is shattered and the past, even the most mundane of pasts, achieves great significance in retrospect. How can Nancy, at the best of times 'a difficult woman' keep her emotional balance when Eddie, the love of her life, dies just days before their wedding? And how can she keep his memory alive, and protect it from those who remember him with less affection but perhaps more honesty?
