Best Before: archiveWho decides when you are past your sell-by date? Over the hill? Or fit only for the scrap heap. Best Before: is a powerful play challenging attitudes to ageing and dementia which resonates in an increasingly elderly society. All Darren wants to do is lead a typical builder's life. But he can't. He has to look after his dad, Albert, and Albert has Alzheimer's Disease. When Claire arrives on the scene, newly qualified, all busy professionalism and text-book answers, Darren resents her interference. He lives it, day after day, what does she know? But Claire has her own problems - not least of all her boyfriend, Benny, the gorgeous, hedonistic model. What has being old and demented got to do with him? He's young, he's going to be a star...And Albert? Albert just watches, listens, copes as best as he can and slowly changes all their lives. Best Before: looks at the effects of Albert's dementia on those who are closest to him - and the attitudes of those who are not. All have a story to tell, and a voice to be heard. Best Before: is a deeply moving, thought-provoking, often very funny portrayal of four people - three faced with too many choices, and one with no choice al all.
