The Kalakutans

Work:: The Kalakutans (S0921276720)

Onome, a dancer wants to become Fela's one and only wife and she is prepared to do anything to achieve her ambition. Playboy, the driver and hard man, is Onome's former lover. He will do anything to get her back except change his thuggish ways. Kwashi, Kalakuta's corrupt, supervisor, craves respect and thinks he can find it in the arms of Onome. Eni is getting married but want to retain her job as the number one dancer in Kalakura. Segun, the resident intellectual tries to fit in with the Kalakuta residents but is racked by guilt over his class and his father's role as a judge dispensing military style justice. Set in 1977, the Kalakutans is an imaginative retelling of events leading up to the invasion of Fela's compound by soldiers from a nearby barracks which led to the burning down of Fela's house and the brutalizing of the residents. The Kalakutans deals with the loves, hopes and ambitions of its protagonists. It is a tale of coming to terms with the consequences of chasing ones' dreams and of trying to come to terms with oneself.
