Cliff Yates was born in Birmingham in 1952. He won both the Aldeburgh first collection prize and the Poetry Business book & pamphlet competition for Henry's Clock (Smith/Doorstop). He wrote Jumpstart Poetry in the Secondary School (Poetry Society) and has a Poetry Society 'Teacher Trailblazer award for dedication to the teaching of poetry. He runs courses and workshops throughout Britain and abroad. The poems in his new collection, Frank Freeman's Dancing School (Salt), winner of an Arts Council England Writer's Award, explore new territory: preoccupied with stories, the nature of memory, and identity.
