¡Fandango! archiveLes Smith's play is based on Pedro Antonio de Alarcon's famous novello The Three Cornered Hat (El Sombrero de Tres Picos). It is Spain, 1806. As Napoleon's troops sweep through northern Europe, the King's delegate arrives at a half forgotten provincial city. His badge of office is the terrible three cornered hat, and he intends to rule with a rod of iron. On his arrival Don Eugenio is greeted by Lucas, the honest miller. And by the miller's wife, Frasquita. And there, in the square, in the hot morning, Frasquita dances a fandango for him and Don Eugenio falls in love. Here is a man whose word is law, who, at a nod can dispatch someone to the dungeon or the Inquisition. Here is a man who can have anything he wants. Anything - apart from the thing he most desires. But when a powerful man falls in love, what can stop him from getting the woman he wants?
