In these days of genome hype, it would be easy to think that we understand why each animal looks different. But we still don t know how genes control the diversity of the animal forms. Recent studies of flies, worms and mice have given us some clues, from which we can begin to explore how genetic differences lead to the wonderful variety of animal forms. Professor Akam is a developmental geneticist who has worked on fruit flies at Oxford, flirted with nematode worms at Cambridge, took a leading role in the study of Hox genes and is now Director of The Cambridge University Museum of Zoology where he has established a laboratory for the study of development and evolution.
