Vengeance, Bloodlust and Afternoon Tea (Medeamaterial, Heartpiece and Quartet) archiveThree rarely produced plays by the German playwright Heiner Muller Brimming with decadence, poetry, sensuality and wit, VENGEANCE, BLOODLUST & AFTERNOON TEA... is a journey of evolution, rife with gender play, beginning with barbarism and ending in sophisticated liberation. A scathing indictment of corrupted power and ambition, MEDEAMATERIAL is a compressed version of the Medea story. In it, Medea is played by a male actor in androgynous guise, taking to the extreme Medea's proclamation. In the short, darkly humorous HEARTPIECE, three surgeons discover their patient1s heart is actually made of brick... QUARTET is based on Choderlos de Laclos1s novel 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' ('Dangerous Liaisons'), in which the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont hatch their amorous, often sadistic fantasies and indulge themselves in scheming the seduction of an innocent virgin. Muller1s version is a highly theatrical interplay between Valmont and the Marquise, overtly sensual and decadent, in which the two characters switch their roles and sexes in playing out the downfall of a virtuous couple who may or may not exist.
