Unveiling Hagar archiveMax Goldwater's wife, Lisa, has died following a long illness. Depressed and vulnerable, he is at the mercy of his sister-in-law's incompatible demands; to pull himself together whilst acting the eternally grieving widower. But Max discovers a different destiny. After years of self-denial he falls in love. There is a problem, however. Layla is a young Palestinian devoted to the liberation of her country, and he is a Jew, carrying with him both the burden of his father's memories as an Allied soldier at the liberation of Auschwitz, and the collective memory of persecution and life without a Jewish homeland. When Layla reveals a terrible secret, the challenge it presents seems insurmountable. Max and Layla play out their personal drama against the wider conflict of the Middle East, and the intensity of family life.
