London 1789 and wealthy heiress Megan West has been sentenced to transportation for life for the murder of her husband. She is taken to Newgate Prison to await passage on HMS London. While imprisoned she forms a friendship with her gaoler; promising him money, he allows her to escape with the aid of family servant Emily Richmond. They make their way to Southampton, go into hiding and wait for the contact that is to secure Meg's freedom. Contact is made by John Chapman who promises to help her providing she follows his instructions to the letter. At midnight they board a large barge and leave England. As the coast disappears from view, Meg's joy is short lived as she is arrested by the one person in whom she has placed all her trust, Sergeant John Chapman, and she is transferred at sea to HMS London. So begins
