The Pandora Effect archiveThe monologist Gary Carter has been exploring the lives of the self-created onstage for twenty years. Now, taking as his starting point the legend of Pandora, and a jewellery box given to his mother by his father on honeymoon in Jersey in 1950, Time Out Award-winning Carter gingerly lifts the lid on his family's past, and breaks open his mother's heart. Performed by Kevin Walton, armed only with a few tricks up his sleeve, this virtuosic extended monologue is a glittering meditation on family secrets, on the meaning of names, on the relationship between sons and mothers, and on the possibility of hope. With haunting music by Jonathan Cooper, and guest appearances by a supporting cast of nuns, Irish poets, mad grandmothers, a BBC executive, Dutch cabaret singers, an Albanian miracle child and other - as Carter puts it - 'very interesting people'. Nothing - no, not even you - will ever be the same.
