The Master Forger archiveThe Master Forger is the authorised dramatisation of Lord John Kilbracken's 1967 biography of Han van Meegeren. In 1945, a previously unknown painting by Vermeer was discovered by the Allies in the collection of Hermann Goering. The question arose: where and how did Goering acquire it? From the investigation came a story that rocked the art world. The trail finally led to Han van Meegeren, an obscure Dutch artist who had sold several authenticated Vermeers over a number of years. Faxed with the death sentence for collaborating with the Nazis, van Meegeren's only way out was to admit that he painted the Vermeer's himself. No one believed him and he thus had to paint a new Vermeer in front of an astonished jury. An extraordinary true story of arrogance and revenge.
