The Diviners archiveIn The Diviners we learn that love, family and friendship are as difficult to find as much-needed water in a parched land, and even more desirable. The play is set in a small rural southern Indiana town. The Depression had taken its toll on society, and the characters in the play seek to regain their faith and restore a better way of life for themselves. As a road-weary strange wanders into town, the local folk are excited; each of them has their own hope of what the result of his presence will be, but the newcomer and a local boy form a special bond that challenges these expectations. It is a story of hopeful love, awakening adolescence, duty towards family, and weathering life's storms. Through it all, the idiot boy's simple faith is a challenge to the more cynical characters to consider their own hearts. In a time that was sparse and prosaic, a rare look at reverence for life and the mystical becomes illuminated in this play amidst the discussions of human frailty and death.
