Stairs to the Roof archiveIn 1941, with the world war and civilisation in danger of collapse, Tennessee Williams dared to imagine a utopian future. Partly autobiographical, Williams is Ben Murphy, a clerk working for a large corporation. Following an argument with his boss he decides to stage a one-man rebellion against the monotony of his daily existence. Through a chance encounter he meets the Girl, a secretary also trapped in a dead-end job, and the two escape on a series of romantic adventures.
