Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All to You archiveA controversial black comedy which was condemned and picketed by Catholics when it was first staged in the USA in 1982. A middle-aged nun lectures her audience on the teachings of the Catholic church, in an hysterically deadpan explanation of everything from why birth control is wrong, to the difference between Limbo and Purgatory. Helped by her young acolyte, Thomas, who can spout the Ten Commandments to order, she lays down the tenets of her faith with a dogmatic conviction that is both terrifying and painfully funny. When her monologue is interrupted by the arrival of four emotionally damaged ex-pupils, the play descends into surreal conflict, as she attempts to justify the effect her cruelty and teachings has had on their lives.
