This powerful contemporary version of Aeschylus's original was published in Cuba in 1968, having won the prestigious Casa de las Americas prize for drama. But the play has never been performed. As in the Aeschylus, there is enormous tension between the fighters and the terror of the women of the city. That fratricide can only bring disaster in its wake was seen, at a time when the Bay of Pigs was only just yesterday, to be defeatist. Incredibly, in 2001, the US embargo remains in place. But history is moving, and the play has a new resonance from those seeking dialogue. Los Siete Contra Tebes is a vibrant, eloquent and poetic drama. Ant
