Savanarola archiveSavanarola is considered by some a saint and by others a charlatan, and his burning in 1498 can be seen to have brought the Florentine Renaissance to an end. He attacked Renaissance pleasure under the Medici but met his end when he struck out against a powerful political papacy. The play poses many questions. Was he led by personal ambition? Was his religious passion fired by sexual obsession? Or was he really the prophet he claimed to be.
