Mister Butterfly archiveMister Butterfly, alias Hoover Sears, is a clown who decides to give up his job, in order to take in the care for four children who represent the 'misfits' that society either rejects or tries to mould to suit itself. Their new adoptive father, Hoover Sears is not convinced that conforming to normality is the most useful approach. Rather than forcing them to communicate in a 'normal' way, he tries to understand each child on their own terms. His unorthodox methods are not appreciated by the people in charge of the Children's Hospital. The authorities threaten to take away the children, who, over the months have become his reason to live...Told in flashback, Hoover's story is set in a piano bar, with live music. The children are played by marionettes manipulated by the actor. 'Mister Butterfly' speaks with rare humour about one of the most delicate issues facing society today: our attitude towards disability - mental or physical, and confronts the wider issue of being 'different'. Part of a three year Interreg project funded by the European Union, this is a show not to be passed up!
