Map of the Heart archiveAlbie is just an ordinary middle-aged man, in an ordinary middle of the road marriage, who s hit the time of his life when he yearns for something more. Following a seemingly out of the blue decision to volunteer for a relief mission in the Sudan, on the eve of his departure he tells his wife, Ruth, he will not be coming back to her. As he walks out of her life, and into that of another woman, Ruth is left to pick up the pieces and work out how to go on with a life that has suddenly shattered around her. However whilst he is away, Albie is taken hostage, and his wife, torn between loyalty and anger, is forced into an uncomfortable spotlight. William Nicholson tells this extraordinary story with integrity and genuine compassion and penetrates right to the heart of a man who finds himself in limbo between two worlds, neither of which he will ever fully belong to.
