Lyrebird: Tales of Helpman archiveWinner of the 1999 Fringe First in Edinburgh. Controversial, witty and in love with the theatre, Helpman left Australia for England in the early 1930's to become a leading figure in ballet and theatre worldwide. Founder of Sadler's Wells Ballet with Lillian Bayliss, he delighted, amused and moved the hundreds of thousands who saw him on stage and screen and is remembered as the Childcatcher in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Set in the dressing room of a theatre somewhere in Australia between acts of the ballet Don Quixote, the ageing Helpmann looks back on an extraordinary life...
