These two short plays to be presented as part of
Breaking In, the unique collaboration between Channel 4 and the Bush Theatre. They have been selected from among six commissioned in the scheme, and will be presented as a double bill for a limited three week season.
Drink, Dance, Laugh and Lie casts a satirical eye over the cult of celebrity, It concerns Reade Collins, who was once famous but has enjoyed happy obscurity ever since. Suddenly everybody seems to know who he is again, and both his work and love life take an upward turn. But Reade, after a time lapse of twelve years, discovers the flipside of fame on his second brush with celebrity.
One Life and Counting is a fantastical tale of Elvis-worship in the parallel universe of Wombstone-over-Edge, where Noah and his two sons' slobbish existence is improved by the arrival of Linda, won as a personal slave in a card game. Aaron dreams of escaping this world and the tyranny of television, taking Linda with him, but escape is not so easy, and the comfort of the familiar proves dangerously seductive.
