St Nicholas Catholic School's principal, Sister Aloysius, disapproves of the changes taking place in the Catholic Church, and in the increasingly liberal views of her fellow mid-sixties New Yorkers. It is this, and school-teacher Father Flynn's doctrinally flexible approach to working, that forces her to question his relationship with Donald, the only black pupil at the school.
