Invited by friends Michael and Vera to admire their newly refurbished flat, the mild mannered writer Ferdinand does his best to enthuse over such things as their new Gothic Madonna and American food. As Michael and Vera happily express the the perfection of their marriage, their tone gradually develops into a personal attack on Ferdinand, his home, his wife and his work as a writer.
