Details
Century Song is an adventurous live-performance hybrid starring Canadian soprano, Neema Bickersteth. A radical reinvention of the recital form, it is part classical song, part dance, part projection, and entirely theatrical. Inspired by Virginia Woolf's Orlando, and Alice Walker's In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens, the show imagines a different way to negotiate history. Through the eyes of our soprano protagonist - a kind of modern day "everywoman" - we move through the past century, using visual art and wordless song to tell a story about the evolution of identity spanning the last 100 years up to the present day. This unique show features music by some of the past 100 years' most adventurous composers, such as Sergei Rachmaninoff, Olivier Messiaen, John Cage, Georges Aperghis, and Reza Jacobs. It also includes visual projections by Germany's fettFilm, that bring major art movements of the 20th century to life. Both whimsical and riveting, Century Song is a thrilling wordless chronicle of the age, built from art.
