In Twilight of the Gods, the final price is paid for the ring's terrible curse. Siegfried's journey leads him to Hagen, Alberich's son, who tricks him into abandoning Brunnhilde and then murders him. Belatedly realising Hagen's deception, Brunnhilde declares Siegfried her only love. Seizing the ring, she rides into Siegfried's burning funeral pyre. The Rhine floods its banks and the Rhine-daughters take back the ring. As the music of Siegfried's 'Funeral March', 'The Ride of the Valkyries' and the Rhine floods the theatre, Brunnhilde's sacrifice finally unleashes the destruction of Valhalla and the start of a new era cleansed of the curse of the ring.
