Details

A woman left by her drover husband is forced to spend days alone in a slab hut with their young child. Paralyzed by fear of the bush, the woman cowers in her flimsy home, comforting herself and her infant with lullabies. Her terror is intensified by an encounter with a malevolent swagman. Inevitably the woman's dread is justified...Dorothy Porter's haunting libretto poignantly captures a woman's horror of a harsh and alien landscape: while the otherness of the Australian bush is powerfully evoked in Johnathan Mill's extraordinary and visceral score in which the whole set becomes a musical instrument.
