With it's intermingling of the serious and the comic, the world of Keiser's Croesus has much in common with that of Shakespeare's late comedies. The score is striking for it's sheer variety. Arias of gorgeous melodic expressiveness are interspersed with ravishing duets, dramatically telling ensembles and dance music of bracing rhythmic thrust. Keiser fervently believed that 'the chief aim of music is the expression of the emotions', and he hits the target squarely in an opera of gloriously lively invention.
