Details

Donizetti's opera explores Schiller's account of a meeting between Elizabeth and her royal rival, Mary Stuart, who is imprisoned at Fotheringay. Their mutual hostility and exchange of insults leads to Elizabeth ordering the execution of Mary in front of Leicester, who has begged for clemency.
