Mary Seacole was an incredible Jamaican heroine whose celebrity and adventures as a nurse once spanned several continents at the time of the Crimean War. Self taught and working in conditions not deemed fit for her sex, she administered emergency medicine to soldiers from both sides in the thick of the Crimean battlefield. The ingenuity and initiative with which she brushed aside the usually steadfast Victorian boundaries of sex, class and race makes for a fascinating and astonishing life story. Hidden by the shadow of Florence Nightingale, her achievements are now begging to be uncovered.
