Details

Saverio Mercadante created the new style of Italian opera in the 19th century and was an enormous influence on the young Verdi. Inspired by Rossini, Mercadante's Soirees Italiennes were composed in Paris in 1835 and consist of eight ariettes and four duets with piano accompaniment. With the exception of one of the duets, they are all settings (again like Rossini) of poems by Pepoli. The second half of the evening will include a selection of scintillating arias from Mercadante's operas.
