As a comedy, L'Heure Espagnole was a huge success at its premiere in Paris in 1904. Ravel indulged his passion for all things Spanish in this opera, with the intention of 'breathing new life into the Italian opera buffa'. His success in doing so enables the farce to gather hysterical momentum towards the unexpected, if inevitable, conclusion.
