Weber shatters musical conventions, transcending the limitations of the flawed libretto to create a dramatic masterpiece that it is difficult to conceive was written in the first twenty-five years of the nineteenth century. Unlike Der Freischutz and Oberon which followed the traditions of Mozart's German operas and Beethoven's Fidelio, Euryanthe has no dialogue, being a continuous musical texture where every word is sung or declaimed. The entire orchestral writing takes a leap forward from the eighteenth century with characteristic colourings of each orchestral section being introduced in an inspirational way - the much performed overture being a foretaste of the brilliance of the complete score.
