Details

First performed at the Opera-Comique in 1872, the quality of this opera led to the commission that produced Carmen, although its music is perhaps more similar in flavour to The Pearl Fishers. Haroun fritters away his vast wealth on gambling and girls - a new one every month. However, this month's girl, Djamileh, has a mind of her own. She has fallen in love with Haroun, so she goes back to him in disguise, as next month's girl. When he discovers the truth, he is confronted with new and surprising feelings.
