Details

Curlew River is Britten's gripping version of the No play Sumidagawa, in which a woman is driven mad by the loss of her only child. The Japanese tale has been moved to medieval East Anglia and the music is influenced by plainsong, but the simplicity and the austere ritualistic style of No theatre has been retained.
