For the first time, the National Theatre has commissioned Mike Leigh to create an original play. Following his usual methods, Leigh has been working with his team to explore characters, relationships, themes and ideas - emerging at the end of eighteen weeks with a play. It will open in the Cottesloe on 15 September; it will be designed by Alison Chitty, with lighting by Paul Pyant, music by Gary Yershon and sound by John Leonard. The cast is: John Burgess, Ben Caplan, Allan Corduner, Adam Godley, Caroline Gruber, Nitzan Sharron, Samantha Spiro and Alexis Zegerman. Mike Leigh s many stage plays include Babies Grow Old (RSC, 1974), Abigail s Party (Hampstead Theatre, 1977) and his last piece, It s A Great Big Shame! (Theatre Royal, Stratford East, 1993). His films include Naked, Secrets & Lies, Topsy-Turvy, All or Nothing and Vera Drake, which won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2004. Running time 2 hrs 15 mins
