The Atheist

The Atheist

Work:: The Atheist (S798769955)

Meet the decadently delicious Augustine Early, one of the world's most crooked journalists. Supremely sardonic and sordid, his nihilistic intentions make an exquisite art of clawing one's way up the professional ladder. A searing and hilarious new play by one of America's most insightful voices about catching the perfect front-page headline, whatever the cost...

The Atheist is about a man embroiled in Godless opportunism following an epiphany aged 12, burning down his trailer home he sees the natural transition as journalism, willing to make stories wherever he finds depravity, turning his own girlfriend into a pornstar actress and driving a voyeuristic mayor to suicide amongst his accolades- all more jolly than it sounds. An enjoyable riffing soliloquy forms the narrative, almost spat out by protaganist Ben Porter with a demonic gaze and a lot of talent, he proves captivating and charming in this one man show to evoke a work of storytelling finesse, the epitome of dark humour and acicular characterisation. A stronger first half perhaps on the literary side but a riveting anti hero’s tale from first to last with lots of guilty pleasure. Good to see Theatre 503 giving host to such credible fresh talent. Show ends quite soon so catch it if you can, Battersea way. ****
