A Human Interest Story
Work:: A Human Interest Story (S1131121565)
A dark tale of voyeurism in the age of technology.
A Human Interest Story (or The Gory Details and All), a play by Carlos Murillo, investigates society's fascination with violence, sex and the lives of others, and how our perceptions of the world are shaped by television and the internet. The play is rooted in a real life event - the 1984 suicide of Pennsylvania state treasurer R. Budd Dwyer, during a televised press conference. The grim footage of this event is currently available to watch on YouTube and has received over 4 million views - a number that continues to rise daily. Imagining a chain reaction sparked by the news in homes across the USA, Murillo darts back and forth between fragmented vignettes: a husband and wife plunged further into marital discord, a teenage boy sexually aroused by the violence, a cat painting a series of Jackson Pollock-like canvases. Four stories, separate but interconnected.
