Sir Mark Elder, who returns next week with his Halle orchestra, here introduces the first of the summer's youth orchestras. In his 10th Symphony Shostakovich embedded motto themes relating both to himself and to the young woman with whom he was infatuated, while for Mahler the German folk-poetry collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn ('The Youth's Magic Horn') proved a rich source of inspiration. Australian composer (and former Berlin Philharmonic viola player) Brett Dean based his orchestral fantasy on the description in a German children's book of a ruined Roman amphitheatre.
