Prom 16 - City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra

Prom 16

Work:: Prom 16 (S343)

Part of the BBC Proms.

Production:: City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (T805900874)

The vigorous overture from Wagner's early, rarely staged epic set in medieval Rome opened the very first Prom 115 years ago. Here it raises the curtain on the second instalment of Paul Lewis's Beethoven piano concerto cycle – an infectiously lively adventure beyond the boundaries of Mozart into a style that was Beethoven's own. This visit by Birmingham's orchestra and its dynamic Latvian Music Director ends with Dvorak's musical response to the period he spent in America, during which he helped establish an American musical indentity, much as he had developed a nationalist school in his Czech homeland.
Conductor Andris Nelsons
