The Duchess of Padua

Work:: The Duchess of Padua (S1356555283)

Author Oscar Wilde

Production:: (T943303000)

The Duchess of Padua, Oscar Wilde's 16th century verse tragedy, which was due to open in Hampstead on 13th April has been beset by it's own tragedy in the form of the rumoured curse attached to the play. The play's Broadway run in 1891 closed after only 3 weeks, with the Producer dying shortly after. When the play was subsequently performed in Germany a few years later, the actor playing the Cardinal was rumoured to have gone insane during the production. The revival of the play at Pentameters Theatre, Hampstead, has now suffered a similar fate as the actor playing the Duke has now been taken seriously ill. Out of concern for his health, the opening of the play has been set back by one week in order that the part can be recast.
