Meet Sister Katie ('God she was fat!') who told Joyce to 'pray hard like a black and her soul would turn white', her long-dead husband Mani: he worked at Ford's but claimed to be a Nigerian chief ('He was a big man in Africa... well, he was a big man 'ere at 20 stone!'), her ambitious daugher Veronica, who's got a PHD but not the longed-for grandchild ("I don't understand why she's not married...") and many others
