American Shorts - American Century/Bus Stop
Work:: American Shorts (S502563118)
Consists of two new comical one act plays. Both plays deal with the bursting of the American Dream during the 20th Century.
The American Century - A married couple blissfully reunited after the end of World War Two are interrupted in the act of procreation by the son they are actually making. He is back from the future and his careless revelations about their future family are horrifying for them and hilarious for us. Murphy Guyer's wry comic tale engages the fascination of American therapy-dependent culture of the modern era and it's encroachment on convivial post War times.
Bus Stop Blues - An absurdist story of a young man desperately in need of some direction in his life. He finds himself inexplicably detained at a bus stop by an elderly woman who claims to possess the knowledge of the secret of longevity.
Bus Stop had its first (and only) public reading in Houston in March 2000 as part of the Country Playhouse's Eighth Annual New Plays Reading Series. Edward Albee attended the reading and provided a great deal of input into the finished version of the text.
