When Darwin published his ideas on evolution, it caused great concern to the church, which hurt Darwin. But conflicts between science and religion began long before that. Scientist and commentator Johnny Ball takes a look at the History of Science. Most early scientists were monks who felt that making scientific discoveries and building on the teachings of the bible, was part of their job. Many great scientists like Galileo and Faraday were deeply religious god fearing men. Copernicus (Copper Knickers) was actually a monk in the Pope's inner circle at the Vatican, when he discovered that the Earth revolved around the Sun. All of them believed that a greater understanding of how the world works was a wonderful way of unravelling 'God's Onion' and of discovering just how miraculous had been the creation of the Earth and all that is in it. All of them followed science religiously
