Don Jose, a young corporal in Seville meets and is immediately bewitched by the Gypsy, Carmen. He arrests her for starting a fight in the cigar factory but on the journey to prison, she persuades him to let her escape. To repay her debt, Carmen becomes passionately involved with Don Jose. One morning when he awakes, Carmen is gone. Obsessed, he eventually finds her in the arms of an officer. Consumed with jealousy, Don Jose kills him. The downward spiral continues as Don Jose's fatal attraction for Carmen builds to a dramatic climax.

Robert North's faithful interpretation of Merimees classic short story was originally created for the Gyor Ballet, Hungary in 1997. Emphasising the flamenco and gypsy cultural influences, Carmen appears for the first time in the UK. Christopher Benstead's haunting score, featuring a full orchestra and songs based on Gypsy poetry, will be performed live for the first time. Running time 2hrs 15mins including interval.
