This BBC drama was considered one of the best things on TV in 1980 and sits as a fascinating companion to Enigma, which investigates the same rich landscape of the secret side of World War 2. A bright ATS wireless operator grows weary of being seen as just a pretty young woman ignored and patronised on every front. OK for sex but forbidden to use her brain, she unwittingly becomes an enemy of the state at a code-breaking facility. But of course the state is run by men and war is mostly fought by men and stupid women should know their place and never pry or men will take their revenge most severely...
