Adapted from the novella by Nabokov, John Turturro plays the chess grand master whose grand passion leaves him rather unsuited to daily life. At the 1929 world chess tournament at Lake Como his bizarre behaviour attracts the attention of Natalia (Emily Watson) and as his affection for her grows his life is thrown into conflict. An engaging, gently humorous and moving tale of love and choices.
