At first glance, Kate and Leopold appears to be a fairly run-of-the-mill romantic fantasy. A successful , 21st century woman meets the Duke of Albany circa 1876, via a hiccup in the time-space continuum. They can't find true love within their own generations so might be possible with one another? Sounds like a recipe for a safe, mushy movie, so what makes this film different? The storytelling and characters are sharp and intelligent and there are lots of great sub-plots to keep you guessing (and laughing!). The film explores issues of honesty, chivalry, and forgiveness, all the while (as every fairy tale does) proving that love can happen regardless of the circumstances. Ahhhhh...lovely!
