Shunji Iwai's compelling account of the horrors of school bullying told through the experiences of the beleaguered 15-year old Hasumi. However, Hasumi is also the brains behind a website forum dedicated to fictional pop star, Lily Chou-Chou, where his relationship with his school fellows is very different. All of which raises very interesting questions about the impact of computer technology on human society. The beautiful cinematography together with a haunting Debussy soundtrack help to counter the ugliness and provide a reminder that life is still worth living.
