Details
The Riot is a 20-minute hiphop dance theatre performance for 5 dancers and 2 musicians, accompanied by original live music. The piece takes inspiration from the key events leading up to the 2011 London riots, in particular the escalating tensions between young people in North London and the Metropolitan Police in the months leading up to the shooting of Mark Duggan, and the immediate aftermath of his death. Contrasting bursts of fast and furious urban dance movement with moments of sober reflection, the choreography will highlight the differing possible interpretations of these events and reflect on how a single moment can become a catalyst for wider unrest and disorder. Dancers will not directly represent the police but will instead embody the frustrations of a community faced with an unexplained fatality, and the chaos and fear of the riots themselves. The piece will be accompanied by a dark, industrial musical score, live acoustic instrumentation and scratch DJ-ing. The Messenger - It's a wet Monday night on an ITU ward in London and the clock is ticking. While staff argue over when to shepherd a patient to the end of life, the past and present collide for the nurses on call. In the waking dream of sleep deprivation, the boundaries between the professional and personal fall away. Everyone's heart is there for the taking.
